Ontario, with some 250,000 lakes and thousands of miles of shoreline (with borders on 4 Great Lakes), is an incredible all-season wonderland for the outdoor enthusiast. Ontario fishing offers the angler access to some of the greatest variety of fish anywhere in Canada. In fact, of the 228 total species found in Canada, 160 can be found in Ontario. Whether you are fly fishing its clean brooks for trout, jigging its crystal-clear lakes for pickerel or trolling one of the “Big” ones for salmon, you will quickly realize that Ontario has what you are looking for. Below are some of the best fishing destinations in Ontario.

Lake of the Woods
This lake is large enough to ensure that you will have plenty of fishing spots. It has over 64,000 miles of shoreline and over 1300 islands. The closest city is Kenora, Ontario, which offers full amenities whether you wish to stay in a fancy hotel, a cozy campground and everything in between.

Other area attractions include: museums, parks and hiking trails. No matter what you want the city of Kenora has it while keeping the small-town ambiance.

Species of fish available here include Walleye, Northern Pike, Muskellunge (musky), Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass, Lake Trout and Yellow Perch.

Lake Nipissing
North Bay, located on the shores of this large lake is a big city (population 63,424 with a total land area of 121.59 square miles.) with a small-town feel, like many Northern communities. It offers first-class dining, all modern amenities and luxurious accommodations for the discerning fisherman, or if you prefer to keep it rustic, a wide variety of motels, bed & breakfasts and campgrounds as well. Species of fish available include Walleye, Northern Pike, Muskellunge (musky), Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass, Whitefish, Ling and Yellow Perch.

Lake Nipigon
The current world record Brook Trout was caught in Lake Nipigon, weighing over 14lbs! This lake is known for harbouring huge fish. Thunder Bay is the closest town and is the most populated metropolis in north western Ontario, home to 108,359 people.

There is a range of comforts available, from upscale dining and hotels to quaint motels and fishing lodges. Aside from incredible fishing, there is a variety of area attractions, including many parks, museums, shopping centres and accessible four-season outdoor fun.

For the natural history buff, a day spent at Fort William Historical Park would be in order. This historic North West fur company trading post has been brought back to life with daily live re-enactments of what life was like in the 1800s.

Species of fish available on this lake include Walleye, Northern Pike, Lake Trout and Whitefish.
